From The Anvil are known for their high-quality products and breath-taking finishes, each of which has different care and maintenance requirements. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at how you can pick the best finish for your needs.

Internal vs. External Finishes

While the majority of From The Anvil’s finishes are suitable for external use, there are a few that are only recommended for internal use in dry rooms as damp environmental conditions can damage the finish. The finishes we advise to only use internally are:

All other From The Anvil finishes are suitable for use in areas where damp conditions are likely such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoors.

If you love the Beeswax finish but want to use these products outdoors, we recommend From The Anvil’s External Beeswax hardware as an alternative. Visually, the two are practically indistinguishable, but the External Beeswax hardware is coated in anti-corrosive beeswax which offers excellent protection when used externally.

If you love the Natural Smooth and Natural Textured finishes but want to use these products outdoors, we recommend From The Anvil’s Antique Pewter and Pewter Patina finishes. Both these finishes feature the same pewter tones but with slight textural differences and offer wonderful protection against external elements.

Coastal Areas

Coastal regions are known to have high levels of atmospheric salinity which has a corrosive effect on metals and causes hardware to degrade at a much faster rate. For this reason, we advise against using the majority of From The Anvil’s finishes in these areas.

Aged Brass and Polished Brass are considered exceptions to this rule as both are suitable for use in coastal regions and can be easily restored and re-polished with a touch of Brasso.

Furthermore, From The Anvil sought a solution to this dilemma which led to the creation of their Marine Stainless Steel collection. Forged from grade 316 marine stainless steel, these products have surpassed 1,000+ hours of salt testing, meaning they offer exceptional protection against corrosion, even in salt-rich and heavily polluted areas.

From The Anvil’s Stainless Steel Cleaner Kits are also available to help remove any particulate deposits that may appear on the surface of these products.

Upon request, many of From The Anvil's mild steel-based finishes can be produced on a stainless steel base meaning the products are then suitable for these harsh environments. Please contact our Bespoke Team for more information.

General Care & Maintenance

For all finishes, we recommend regularly oiling all moving parts using ‘3-in-1 Oil’ (92337). This increases the mechanical life expectancy of your products and is highly recommended during initial installations.

Hardware should only be fitted in fully dry and cured rooms. Any plaster, paint, or other wet trades may affect the atmospheric conditions in the room and impact the longevity of your hardware.

Finally, all products should be cleaned according to their finish. The following table gives an overview of how each finish should be maintained, and you can find more information and advice by clicking on the name of a specific finish.
