Aged Brass is one of our best-selling finishes and it’s easy to see why. This finish is as durable as it is breathtaking, offering the beauty and quality that’s expected of From The Anvil hardware. In this blog, we take a closer look at Aged Brass hardware.

How Aged Brass is Made

Aged Brass products start with a base of solid brass which is moulded into shape using traditional hot forging techniques. Once shaped, each piece undergoes an accelerated ageing process which causes a dark patina to develop across the product. The surface is then polished, creating a bright, reflective finish which contrasts with the dark patina within the grooves and recesses of the product.

Because these products are unlacquered, Aged Brass is referred to as a ‘living finish’. This means that it will continue to age and oxidise over time, creating a characterful appearance that tells a story.

However, if you prefer the bright, shiny look, you can re-polish your Aged Brass products to reverse the tarnishing and restore their original charm.

How to Style Aged Brass

The refined character of Aged Brass complements an array of colour palettes, integrating seamlessly into a variety of diverse design styles.

Green and blue shades pair wonderfully with Aged Brass, amplifying the depth of its warm undertones. When polished, the bright appearance of Aged Brass provides a striking contrast with its luminous surface creating the impression of a subtle, ambient glow.

Aged Brass also looks wonderful against neutral shades like cream and beige. The subtlety of these colours draws the eye towards the hardware, allowing it to become the focus of the space. Aged Brass offers timeless elegance, particularly when left to age and develop a rich patina. This combination works especially well when coordinated with dark wood accents, such as mahogany furniture, and woven materials like jute rugs and corduroy cushions.

How to Maintain Aged Brass

Because Aged Brass is unlacquered, we refer to it as a living finish. This means that it continues to oxidise over time, causing the metal to darken across the surface.

If the products become too dark for your liking, it can be easily repolished with some Brasso and a soft cloth to restore its original shine.

Aged Brass is suitable for both interior and exterior use. When used outdoors, harmful deposits may build up on the surface of your products but can be easily removed by wiping an oily cloth over the surface. This also aids protection against any environmental elements such as weathering.

As with all From The Anvil finishes, we recommend regularly oiling any moving parts with their 3-in-1 Oil which is designed to increase the mechanical life expectancy of your products.
