What Steel Window Hardware do I Need?
Steel windows are a fantastic way to bring a striking, architectural element into your home. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at what makes steel windows so special and how to choose the perfect hardware to complement them.
What Are Steel Windows?
As the name suggests, steel windows are made with glass panes set within strong steel frames. These frames are typically welded for extra durability, allowing them to support large glass panels effortlessly. Their slim, streamlined design lets in plenty of natural light, creating a bright and airy feel while maintaining a modern, stylish look.
Though steel windows are often associated with contemporary and industrial-style homes, their history actually dates back to the post-World War I era. Many period properties feature these classic windows, proving just how timeless and versatile they are.
Because of their slender frames, it’s important to choose window hardware that enhances both their appearance and functionality.

What Hardware Do Steel Windows Need?
When it comes to hardware for steel windows, you’ll need two main components: fasteners (or window handles) and stays.
Night-Vent Fasteners
Night-vent fasteners are the handles that allow you to open and close your windows. From The Anvil's fasteners are designed with an offset backplate to fit the slim profile of steel windows. They can be locked in both the fully closed position and the night-vent position, which allows for airflow while keeping your home secure. Each fastener comes with a matching push plate keep and can be fitted to either left- or right-handed windows using the M5 machine screws included.
Stays
Window stays are the arms that hold your window in an open position. From The Anvil's steel window stays have a slim profile with an offset backplate, making them a perfect fit for the narrow ledges of steel windows. Each set includes a stay pin and a stay rest, allowing the window to be held in multiple open positions. If you’re looking for added security, a locking stay pin is available separately, featuring a grub screw for secure closure. From The Anvil's stays come in two sizes—8” and 10”—to suit different window dimensions. Like the fasteners, they also include M5 machine screws for a sturdy installation.
